CHINA NATIONAL DAY CELEBRATION DINNER – OCTOBER 1, 2012

We’re hosting another National Dinner on behalf of the Northern Region Branches.

The Pearl Garden Restaurant, Newmarket at 6.30pm on
Monday October 1, 2012.  Set menu for $40.00.

Pearl Garden Restaurant is on Level One at 1 Teed Street, Newmarket. Going north, Teed Street is off Broadway between Kent and Eden Streets and before Khyber Pass Road.  Just in case you get lost the Restaurant’s phone number is 09 523 3696.

The Restaurant will provide a screened area for our group and the parking is handy on Teed Street.

The Consulate-General has kindly accepted our invitation to help us celebrate the 63rd anniversary of the founding of the PRC.  This year is also the 60th anniversary of NZCFS and 40 anniversary of diplomatic relations between NZ and China. We hope Consul-General Mme Liao Juhua will be there.  Warren Freer, ranked Number 3 in the Labour Government that opened diplomatic relations, has confirmed, so has our recent NZCFS intern Roth le Gentil from France.  We expect the usual healthy contingent from Hamilton and also our friends from Hibiscus and Tauranga branches.

One of the highlights of the evening will be the drawing of the NZCFS Raffle for two return Air tickets to Beijing. National Secretary Heiko Lade and representatives of Air NZ will also be there.

All are welcome, but bookings are essential with payment at the Restaurant on the evening. Please phone Cecil on 09 620 6710 or email cecilf@xtra.co.nz with details of your booking.

Bookings must be made by Tuesday 25 September.

Monday 1 October 5pm

1 Teed St, New Market
Meal $40 per person.

Vincent Ward joins Auckland Branch

Auckland Branch has a long tradition of film maker members starting with Rudall Hayward in the 1950s, but Oscar-winner Vincent (Vigil, What Dreams May Come, The Navigator) is perhaps our most distinguished yet.  Vincent has sent his apologies for our October 1 dinner; he will be in Shanghai preparing for his one-man art exhibition at the Shanghai Biennale.

NZCFS on Facebook

We now have an offical NZFS Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/nzchinasociety.  You are welcome to go to the page and “Like” and be kept up to date with regular posts.  Please join us and put up your favourite photographs of China!

OBITUARY Jack Woods

It is with deep regret we learned of the death of Jack Woods – a long time member of the society.  After visiting China with the first Teachers Tour in 1974 Jack and his wife Margaret became keen supporters of the NZCFS.

Jack was a widely respected – and loved principal of a South Auckland Primary School, while Margaret taught the children of Auckland Hospital.

At this time no Chinese books were reaching the New Zealand public and Jack and Margaret turned their spare room into a book storage area and imported a variety of books mostly in English from China as well as the magazine “China Reconstructs”, children’s picture books, novels, language primers etc. These they provided to retail outlets and to individual buyers and to the CFS library in the then Swanson Street clubroom.  Jack was a gentle and friendly man, highly principled and he supported the society until health problems kept him from further activity. We remember him with  affection and respect. – Cecil Fowler

Sunday 25 November

Our fundraiser for the He Ming QIng (Kathleen Hall) Scholarship will be held at “Westwind” on Riversdale Road, Avondale. We have a great programme planned, starting at 5pm, and aim – with your help to raise $1000 towards the scholarship fund which enables promising students from remote villages in China to complete their education and train as nurses at a medical college before returning to work in the countryside.

We hope you will arrange to come and bring your friends.  We will send out the complete programme as soon as it is finalised.

Subscription! Subscription! Subscription!

We cannot function without this and our work is needed in China.  We still need to keep New Zealanders informed about China and we are proud to continue the work that Rewi Alley began by supporting co-operative movement in rural China and honouring the memory of Kathleen Hall by supporting the nurses training of young rural women through the He Ming Qing scholarship.  Renew by filling out our membership renewal form.
