On 22 September the Timaru Branch NZCFS celebrated the Moon Festival with a sumptuous meal at the Golden Palace restaurant. Special guests included Madam Chu Yanli, Vice Consul General, Peoples Republic of China Consulate, Christchurch and members of the Christchurch Confucius Institute.

Miss Shansan Song who is a PhD student at the University of Canterbury played “Running Water from the High Mountains” on Guzheng and the Confucius Institute Mandarin Language Assistants sang a vocal item. Dr Licheng Li (C.I. Language Instructor) also gave a vocal solo.

Vice Consul General Madam Chu Yanli explained the significance the Moon Festival. In China it is held in autumn when the moon is at its brightest. It is a time for family reunions and thanksgiving for a successful harvest. In some ethnic minorities the sun and moon are regarded as a couple and the stars as their children.
