Technology, will launch a MANDARIN CORNER initiative. It is open to all in the community to learn the Chinese Language, Culture, Art and Music. There is no charge for this class. Participants will be asked to contribute towards the cost of materials only. This class will be held in the International Department, Room AE12, at Waiariki. Zhang Min has a master’s in Chinese linguistics from Nanjing University and has been teaching Chinese to non-native speakers for 5 years. This is her second year at Waiariki. Rotorua is lucky to have Min, thanks to an agreement with the Confucius Institute at Victoria University of Wellington and the Chinese Education Department.

Also Rotorua is fortunate to have 2 very capable Chinese Tai Chi Instructors offering both beginners and intermediate/advanced Tai Chi classes. The beginners Tai Chi Classes are being held at the Rotorua RSA every Thursday Evening at 6:15 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. The cost is $ 5.00 per person per session. Helen Sun is the tutor for this class. She is teaching the basic National Standard Simplified 24 Tai Chi form. The class begins with a warm up and stretching session and then breaks the form into groups of about 5 moves per session always combining the previous learned moves with the new introduced moves. Lei Lei is the tutor for the intermediate/advance class. This class is held every Wednesday morning 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. at Parksyde. This class continues to practice and improve on the National Standard Simplified 24 Tai Chi and the introduced Fan form which was preformed by the Chinese at the Beijing Olympics.

Tai Chi practice has health benefits and is recommended by ACC, especially for older persons both men and women in helping to prevent falls. It improves balance and co-ordination, builds muscle strength especially in the legs, increases flexibility and improves cardiovascular and respiratory fitness. Tai Chi is not only muscular exercise but also breathing exercises.
