International Mother Language Day Celebrated in Palmerston North

277

International Mother Language Day was created by UNESCO 15 years ago with the aim of promoting the awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. It is held every year on 21st February.  This year Kate Ngai organised a very successful stall in the Palmerston North Public Library at which seven NZCFS  members helped demonstrate paper cuts of traditional designs used for decoration or for various cultural celebrations. Members of the public were then encouraged to participate by making their own cuts.  May Needham and Wang Libin demonstrated Chinese calligraphy and wrote the names of members of the public in Chinese for them to take home.
