Yunnan Earthquake Appeal

Yunnan earthquake_ruinsMany of you will be aware of the tragic earthquake which occurred recently in Yunnan Province with the loss of several hundred lives.

This event brought back a lot of memories for Christchurch residents of our own tragedies in the city and the on-going effects on the residents and fabric of the city.

At the time of our earthquake, we received tremendous support from China:

  • The Chinese Government sent search teams to assist with body recovery
  • The Chinese Embassy in Wellington assisted the families of the Chinese students killed in the CTV building by meeting the families and helping with body identification
  • The Chinese Embassy set up a temporary Consulate in a motel to process students and other Chinese Nationals needing to get out of Christchurch
  • The Chinese communities in Christchurch assisted Rewi Alley Chinese School in providing support services for those displaced and bereaved
  • The Chinese Peoples Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (Youxie) donated $NZ20,000 to NZCFS to distribute directly to our members who were directly affected by the quakes
  • Wuhan City in China donated $NZ19700 to the Mayor’s Fund and this was put towards a Rapid Response Vehicle for St John Ambulance.
  • We now have a permanent Consulate in Christchurch that has been so supportive of the local community, both Chinese and Kiwi.

Yunnan earthquake_rescuer with baby + nurseI feel we have a duty to repay some of the generosity shown to Christchurch and the whole of New Zealand.

If you can help in any small way, we would appreciate your support by making your donation to our Yunnan Earthquake Fund set up at Kiwibank Account #38-9010-0816274-04.  Christchurch branch raised $NZ231.00 at our recent Youth Group Yum Cha, which is a great start.

As NZCFS is a registered charity, we are able to issue a tax receipt if you require one.  Email me ([email protected]) if you need one.  Please put ‘tax receipt’ in the subject line.

Yunnan earthquake_ruins_2Thank you in anticipation of your support.
