The ‘Rewi Alley in China‘ exhibition opens in University College of Learning (UCol) Whanganui, April 19 until May 19, 2017. For more details of the location, see below.
The exhibition comprises 70 images covering many aspects of Rewi Alley’s life in China, is part of the celebrations of 3 milestones in 2017:
- The anniversary of 120 years since his birth,
- His first landing in Shanghai 90 years ago, and
- His passing 30 years ago.
Rewi inspired the founding of the NZCFS (New Zealand China Friendship Society) in 1952.
The exhibition is co-hosted by NZCFS and the China Cultural Centre in NZ, with NZCFS providing the photos from our collection. These are curated by Christchurch branch.
Jan McLeod, President of Whanganui branch, says:
“We are thrilled with the loans of Rewi memorabilia that have come to the Whanganui Branch and will be included in the exhibition:
Books, medals, artworks from Deng Bangzhen & Lu Bo, and especially the DVD’s of excellent documentaries that bring the photos of the ‘Rewi Alley in China’ Exhibition to life. These were kindly donated by Natural History NZ through the good offices of George Andrews (NZCFS Vice-President, Northern North Island).
A 3rd-year student of UCoL Design School, Miles Ward, has created the very striking advertising material, and Mike Queree in Mianyang arranged for its printing & courier delivery from China. Our friend “John” He Jianxin of the Bazhong Kids Literacy RAFE program insisted on paying for this, as his “Thank You” to NZCFS!!”
