Lei Tai, replica of Rewi Alley’s home (in present Shandan Bailie School), in winter

This building is a replica of the home that Rewi Alley lived in when he was headmaster of the original Shandan Bailie School.  Build on a natural raised-earth platform, it has a central atrium with rooms on either side.  Inside are samples of Rewi’s belongings and furniture, including a kang bed, tables, typewriter, books and pictures.

The centre room and righthand room are filled with historical photos of Rewi, the Chinese leaders he had meetings with, original activities at the school and in the community.   There are also photos of Rewi with New Zealand Prime Ministers, dignitaries, visiting delegations to the school, the local school teachers who have been hosted in NZ, and records of other significant events.
