NZCFS Explore China: The Centre Tour

October 7 to 29 2018, 22 Days in China

 

A further tour from NZCFS in the acclaimed and popular ‘Explore China’ series. The
focus of this tour is to explore sites, activities and scenery of significant interest in central
China. An efficient itinerary takes in Jiangsu, Henan, Chongqing, and Hunan.
Highlights will include:

Jiangsu: Nanjing

  • Sun Yatsen Presidential Palace
  • Nanjing massacre memorial museum

Train to Henan

  • Kaifeng – a dynastic capital
  • Millennium Park – a recreation of the famous Song dynasty painting, “life beside the
    river”
  • Yuntai mountain – red rock valley, monkeys
  • Luoyang – Longmen grottoes; Shaolin temple

Fly to Chongqing

  • Three Gorges museum
  • Wulong sunken karst UNESCO scenic park
  • Three gorges cruise (3 nights) to Yichang, visit dam site

Train to Hunan

  • Zhangjiajie scenic area
  • Fenghuang old town
  • Changsha, Shaoshan – birthplace of Mao Zedong

Fly Changsha – Shanghai, free time in Shanghai.

Fully escorted, 4-star twin-share accommodation* or best available. All inclusive price

Itinerary

October 7: Depart NZ
Day 1: Arrival in Nanjing, Jiangsu. Relaxing in the hotel or light activities such as strolling along Qinhuai River (depending on the arrival time). Stay in Nanjing.

Day 2: Presidential Palace of Sun Yat-sen, Nanjing Massacre Memorial, bullet train (3 hours) to Kaifeng.

Day 3: Millennium city park, Shan Shan Gan Guild Hall, Xiang Guo Buddhist Temple, stay in Kaifeng.

Day 4: Bus to Yuntai Mountain (2hrs); Red Rock Valley in the mountain, stay at Yuntai Shan.

Day 5: More sites in Yuntai Mountain. Bus to Luoyang (2.5hrs); White Horse temple, Luoyang Old Town. Stay in Luoyang.


Day 6: Bus to Shaolin Temple (1.5hrs). Pagoda Forest, Songyang ancient academy, martial arts demonstration, back to Luoyang.

Day 7: Longmen Grottoes, bus to Zhengzhou(2.5hrs), visit Henan Provincial Museum. Stay in Zhengzhou.

Day 8: Flight to Chongqing, visit Three Gorges Museum, Ciqikou old town, check in to the hotel in Chongqing.

Day 9: Bus to Wulong for Karst landform scenery
(3.5hrs). Rurong Stalactite Cave, the only World Natural Heritage Site for caves. Stay in Wulong.

Day 10: Three Natural Bridges. Travel back to Chongqing, shopping for snacks and drinks for the 3-night cruise. On board around 8 p.m.

Day 11: Shore excursions are Fengdu Ghost City, and Shibaozhai. Captain’s Welcome Reception. Stay on board.

Day 12: Shore excursions to White Emperor City
and Goddess Stream, cruise through Qutang and Wu gorges, evening farewell banquet and cabaret, late evening: pass through 3 gorges locks. Stay on board.

Day 13: Visit 3 gorges dam site, take bus (1.5 hours) to Yichang railway station, and train arriving at 6.00pm in Zhangjiajie.

Day 14 to 16: A leisurely three days in Wulingyuan
Scenic Reserve, walking in the forest park among the dramatic landscape, caves and peaks, as well as the old town. Stay in Wulingyuan, Zhangjiajie.

Day 17: Travel to Fenghuang by bus (about 4 hours), visiting Junsheng stone painting gallery on the way. Enjoy the night scenes in the very picturesque old water town of Fenghuang.

Day 18: A relaxed day in Fenghuang, walking the
cobbled streets alongside the river, visiting the cultural heritage sites. Stay in Fenghuang.

Day 19: Travel to Shaoshan, make a side trip (one hour) to Ningxiang county to visit the birth place and memorial hall to Liu Shaoqi before returning to stay overnight in Shaoshan.

Day 20: Visit Mao Zedong former residence and Memorial Hall, travel to Changsha, visit the Bamboo Slips Museum, stay in Changsha.

Day 21: Fly to Shanghai in the morning, a free day
in Shanghai.

Day 22: Early afternoon flight to NZ, arriving Auckland
early on October 30
