Our GUEST SPEAKER is BEV EMMERSON, Librarian in charge of the Foreign Language Collection at the library. Her talk is THE CHINESE ARE COMING Because Rotorua is a desirable destination for foreign students and it appears that there has been an ever increase in the number of Chinese students as well as Chinese immigrants it behoves the library to assist in making these people welcome by increasing the collection of books written in Chinese.
Last year we donated $ 1,000 to assist the library in this endeavour. Bev will talk about the cost of such books and have some examples of the books she purchased with this money. She will explain how she goes about purchasing for the foreign collection. Bev is an interesting speaker with a sense of humour and I am sure she will answer any question you may have regarding the library,

A Shanghai delegation of 4 was welcomed at John and Maisie Bonds residence on 27 June by the Committee. A shared lunch was provided. This proved to be very successful with a very nice day after all the bad weather we had been experiencing. They seemed to enjoy the experience of being invited into someone’s home in a very nice setting along the Utuhina Stream. Due to the unpredictable weather numbers had to be restricted to the committee.
The Committee put forward Oscar Nathan as the nominee for the prominent Persons Tour. We were delighted that he was willing to have his name go forward. We will be informed by the end of the month of the successful candidates.
John Chang Wang represented us at Conference this year. He has brought back many DVDs and some books. These are available for members to borrow. Some DVDs are full length Chinese movies and can be viewed in English as well as in Chinese. Norma Millard will issue these to anyone wishing to borrow them at our meetings. This will assist in keeping track of them so everyone has a chance to view them. After everyone has had a chance to see the DVDs or read the books we will look at donating them to the library or schools which ever is appropriate.
Last Month Annette Joyce gave a very interesting talk as to why a Chinese Sister City relationship was important. By having this exchange it gave the students who went on these trips a broader horizon beyond. It changed their outlook and made them realise how lucky they were. She also encouraged our organisation to possibly participate with these exchanges when the Chinese visit their school. The Committee thinks this could be worth pursuing.
As most are aware that RAVE has and Arts/Crafts Shop where people living in Rotorua can sell what they have made. Our members are invited to be apart of this if they so wish. For more information you can contact Janet Taiatini PH. 3461582. The shop also welcomes any volunteers who may wish to work in the shop for short periods of time. Their hours are
10:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. These hours are broken up into 2 parts on a daily basis and one can volunteer once a month or more if one wishes. Janet can also be contacted for more information.
