 LAST MEETING:

Katya Williams, Relationship Manager for commercial clients at the ANZ National Bank, spoke to us on the ANZ in China, its banking network, the possibilities for trade and how the bank can assist its clients.

The ANZ has its own Branches as well as connections with several other banks. The value of this network is that the New Zealand client can be assisted through the paperwork of either exporting to or importing from China, by people working in the Chinese system.  The bank can also assist with connecting businesses to clients in China.

One of the factors Katya spoke about that influences the Chinese economy is water supply and shortages.  Currently China’s supply of fresh water per capita is one third of the global average and Northern China has 20% of the water, 50% of the population and 65% of the arable land.  As the wealth of China’s society increases so does the residential use of water.

The Chinese economy has been booming and for this to continue China needs more people in the cities where wages are higher, and for those people to save less and spend more. Currently 130 million people live on less than USD 7,000 per year.

New Zealand needs to maximize our land and water resources for export to help feed an increasing number of wealthy Chinese.  New Zealand’s commodities of dairy products, lamb and logs are in a boom phase at the moment and we also have advantages in health and environmental products and are leaders in agricultural technology and expertise.

Katya presented facts and figures very clearly, and her reasoned and thoughtful talk was illuminating and of great interest to anyone wanting to develop business with China.

Blossom Parade Market

Thank you Mike Earle, Lou Klinkhamer, Janet Kee, Lucy Yu, Maurice Beeby Tom Paramore, Miranda Chan and Sally Russell  for putting together a NZCFS presence at the Blossom Parade Market Day.  We had fun, looked good, gave people Chinese names, raised money for our Guangxi projects and talked to lots of people about China and the Hastings’ Guilin Sister– City connection.

NZCFS flew our flags well
