Chinese Opera in the Park – 8 February

The Confucius Institute at the Victoria University of Wellington and the China Cultural Centre are delighted to present The Peony Pavilion, a masterpiece by Tang Xianzu.

To be held at Wellington’s Botanical Gardens, The Peony Pavilion is a classic Kunqu opera – a style of Chinese theatre from the 16th to 18th Centuries that was known as “the mother of a hundred operas” in China. Its creator, Tang Xianzu, was the greatest sixteenth-century Chinese playwright.

Chinese opera star, Dong Fei, will perform his signature role as the female lead in this Chinese theatre classic.

Whether you’ve seen a Chinese opera before, or if this is your first time, do come along and enjoy this classic piece of performance art!

We hope to see you there!
