Our Branch decided to turn the tables and and give newly arrived and other Chinese students a lesson in NZ cooking. Around 25 Chinese students and MLAs joined branch committee at the kitchen of the Celebration of Age Centre on a Sunday 26 August. Groups of six or seven gathered round prepared tables of ingredients and cooking utensils, with a volunteer to oversee the preparation.
Using a recipe, measuring ingredients , and using an egg beater was for some a first In cooking skills. Making and decorating ginger bread men, preparing dough for the pizza bases and cutting up the toppings, making brownies to cook in a microwave, and savoury bread cases were some of the activities. A Barrista, teaching how to make coffee was also a huge success.
The cooking was carefully overseen and then everyone enjoyed the eating of their labours with a cup of coffee or tea.
