Our branch will cover the cost of the lunch for our members and their invited guests, but such branch members and guests would be expected to bring along appropriate Countdown or Pak’n Save vouchers (perhaps $20-00) which we would collect and then send down to Christchurch Branch for distribution to those of their members in need. guests donating vouchers can provide their name and email or postal address, or remain anonymous. It is requested that members and guests wear a name badge or label if they have one. We suggest that you arrive from 11.45 to make sure you are there by 12 noon (large tables at the rear of the restaurant). We are hoping for a large turnout so will need to book enough tables.  Pot-Luck luncheon – Sunday 19 June

Unfortunately did not result in a great turn-out of members. We had hoped that a Sunday lunch meeting in the mid-winter months might be more convenient for members than driving out in the evening. Guest speaker Su Ellis also brought along son Alex who is currently studying at Hamilton East High School, and gave some interesting comments of his own. Chinese students tend to be seen as a model in New Zealand for diligent study, academic achievement, and good behaviour. It was thus interesting to hear that Alex, the only European in his school, and still learning Chinese himself, was held up by his teacher as a model for good classroom behaviour. Su and Alex gave a very interesting insight from the position of being a very rare European family in largely rural Chinese communities. The lack of preparation and training for teaching , resource materials, and opportunity for professional development for Kiwi teachers in China (away from the main centres), lead to Su and husband Chris’ involvement in setting up professional development conferences for English language teachers in China.

Shanxi Delegation with Miao, Jenevere and Ian

Lend-a-book or Swap-a-book

Some of us have books and novels on or about China. If you provide brief details of the book we can publish this in our newsletter – another member can then contact you to borrow the book. If we have sufficient interest we could include swap-a-book or lend-a-book as part of our monthly meeting. We would also love to have someone give a spoken précis of any interesting book on or about China that they have read. We also welcome any book reviews for publishing in our newsletter.
