Rotorua had a very busy September. The Arts Village, our meeting place, held an Open Day on 19 September where the various organisations who use the facility were able to promote what they were all about to the public. We invited Mr. Cheng, a Rotorua Resident who taught Chinese in China before coming to live in New Zealand. Using his calligraphy skills he wrote the visitors names in Chinese script. We promoted the up and coming Moon Festival as well as the New Zealand China Friendship Society.

Then on the 25th of September the Rotorua Chinese Community Chamber or Commerce held a function to launch their new organisation along with the opening of a Chinese Exhibition of art pieces that have been gifted to the city by Chinese delegations over a number of years.

After that we all had the pleasure of being entertained at the Rotorua Multicultural Association’s Moon Festival by A Chinese Orchestra from Auckland’s New Zealand Chinese Cultural & Performing Arts Charitable Trust. A mask changing artist also gave an intriguing performance. There was a description of the various traditional instruments along with solo performances of these beautiful instruments. Included in the entertainment was a graceful performance of the traditional ‘Peacock Dance‘ as well as a group of local traditional dances. After the entertainment we were all invited to sample various types of Moon Cakes along with other Chinese finger food. It was a wonderful evening of Chinese Cultural in a wonderful venue for such an event. We are always grateful for the Rotorua Multi Cultural Association for organising this important Chinese festival every year.
