In September 2011, I was delighted to have the opportunity of meeting our two He Ming Qing nursing scholars, Shi Hongli and Wang Shuizhen, and to hear first-hand of their experiences and expectations since moving to Lanzhou to attend University. Wang Shuizhen, Fourth Scholar Feng County, Baoji District, Shaanxi Province Wang Shuizhen started her scholarship in September 2010 at Northwest Minorities University in Lanzhou. From: Minle County, Zhangye District, Gansu Attends: Gansu Medical University, Nursing Studies Scholarship: September 2009 to June 2013 Shi Hongli comes from a small village in a very poor county, Minle Xian, in Zhangye City, not far from Shandan on the edge of the Gobi Desert. She is now in her third year at Gansu Medical University in Lanzhou and was chosen by the Women’s Federation of Zhangye, who are looking after her. 2008 Scholar – Shen Qianqian

Shen Qianqian was chosen as our 2008 He Ming Qing Scholar in Hebei Province. She was 20 years old and vcame from a remote village in the Taihang Mountains, south of where Kathleen Hall was working. Shen received no support from any other source than her family, who are poor farmers. She was an average student but had a strong commitment to her profession. First Recipient, 2006 – Wei Yunjie

Wei Yunjie was the first recipient of the He Ming Qing scholarship. She was born in 1986 and comes from Chuang Shang Village in Huanjiang County southwest of Guilin. Wei Yunjie is Maonan, one of the smaller ethnic groups in China with approximately 90,000 mostly living in Guangxi. Huanjiang is the only Maonan Autonomous County in China. He Ming Qing (Kathleen Hall) Memorial ScholarshipFrom 1996-2005 the NZ-China Friendship Society Inc. in association with N.Z.
