Vietnam, Yunnan, Tibet Adventure April 2021

This is still one year away, and we are hopeful that we can deliver! Domestic travel in China is starting to take off again, but the restrictions of foreigners entering China and the return to New Zealand are yet to be determined. At this stage we are seeking expressions of interest only, with no commitments on either side.

A brief follow up of this most adventurous tour to date. Total 28 days, offered in three sections. If interested please indicate if you are interested in which parts, A, B and C, that you may be interested in. Again no commitment, and we appreciate important detail is still unavailable.

PART A: Days 1-6, Northern Vietnam- Hanoi, Halong Bay, Sapa

In Hanoi we will stay in the fascinating old city. One highlight will be to visit the Ho Chi Min museum, a very well presented and non-judgemental cover of the man warmly thought of as grandfather of Vietnam, and a non-judgemental presentation of the period of history he played a major part in.

Halong Bay is the unique area of Karst Mountains coming out of the sea. The Guilin of the South China Seas.

Sapa is the mountainous area in the North-west of Vietnam, populated by the Hmong people, closely related to the Miao of South-west China. Interestingly, this ethnic group were pushed south over 1000 year ago to populate thiese hilly regions. The town of Sapa is a combination of ethnic markets and a colonial hill station. Very close to our border crossing to Yunnan at Hekou.

PART B: Days 7- 23, Vietnamese border to Lhasa. This is the core of this adventure, 16 days travel from the south-west of Yunnan to the south east of Tibet and Lhasa. Hekou (border with Vietnam)- Yuangang terraced fields- Jianshui- Kunming-Lijiang-Shangrila……Lhasa

At this stage it is uncertain if the travel from Shangrila to Lhasa can be achieved overland, or a flight is required due to changing policy of travel for foreigners. The flight is the most certain mode of travel: then a round trip of land travel from Lhasa to the southeast of Tibet and return will be substituted. Further information of this will be available as soon as possible.

PART C: Days 23 to 28 Lhasa to Everest Base Camp return. Lhasa-Gyantse-Shigatse- Everest Base Camp-Shigatse-Lhasa. The timing to visit here is great, with settled weather and emerging from the cold of winter on the Tibetan plateau.

At this stage of uncertainties, we seek and expression of interest only. Part A and C are offered as optional add ons to the core Part B, please indicate if you are interested in Part A and/or Part C as add-ons. No commitment at this stage!

Notes on altitude:

Part B- Lijiang 2400masl;Shangrila, 3200 masl; Lhasa, 3650 masl. There will be some passes over 4000 masl, but just for a short duration.

Part C: Shigatse, 4000 masl; Everest Base Camp, 5200 masl.
