Christchurch branch Yunnan Earthquake appeal raises $5770

Presenting $5500 cheque to consul
Christchurch mayor, Leanne Dalziel presents the cheque for $5500 to Consul General Jin Zhijian (Chris Goodwin, President Christchurch branch, is supporting the cheque)

Congratulations Christchurch branch, in your efforts to raise money for victims of the Yunnan earthquake, Aug 2014.

Chris Goodwin, President of the branch, says:

“Overall all, including nearly $1000 raised by other branches notably Nelson, Rotorua and Hibiscus Coast, we were able to donate $5770.00 which will be on its way to China this week.

We had our annual National Day banquet and passed the hat around at the banquet with the aim of topping the fund up another $300 so the fund would match the cheque we had prepared.  But we managed to get nearly $600.00 from the 100 people who attended the evening.  As well we also collected from the ticket price a further $530.00 for the He Ming Qing (Kathleen Hall) Scholarship fund.”

The cheque (for $5500) was presented to the new Consul General Jin Zhijian by Christchurch Mayor Leanne Dalziel as shown in the image above and also click HERE to see it on Christchurch branch’s Facebook page.

Consul General Jin thanked us all for the donations saying that this brought back his memories of the Tangshan earthquake in 1976.  His house collapsed in that quake and even though he was young boy, he had to drag his grandmother out of the rubble.  He remembers the support Tangshan got from within and outside China.

The Mayor spoke of the generosity of Christchurch to the victims of the Sichuan earthquake in 2008 little realising that Christchurch would be needing similar support.  She underlined the importance of showing generosity, accepting support then paying it forward when the opportunity presents itself.

Of course, the additional $270.00 will accompany the cheque to the Yunnan Earthquake Relief Fund!
