This building is a replica of the home that Rewi Alley lived in when he was headmaster of the original Shandan Bailie School. Build on a natural raised-earth platform, it has a central atrium with rooms on either side. Inside are samples of Rewi’s belongings and furniture, including a kang bed, tables, typewriter, books and pictures.
The centre room and righthand room are filled with historical photos of Rewi, the Chinese leaders he had meetings with, original activities at the school and in the community. There are also photos of Rewi with New Zealand Prime Ministers, dignitaries, visiting delegations to the school, the local school teachers who have been hosted in NZ, and records of other significant events.
This article is based on a report by Jane Furkert of her work: ‘An Independent Travellers’ Guide to Rewi Alley Locations in China, 2016’, that was funded by the Rewi Alley Friendship and Exchange (RAFE) Fund.
