MLA Hosting; can you Help?

The Confucius Institute at the University of Canterbury is looking for two to three families in Christchurch who would be willing to offer hosting this year for Mandarin Learning Assistants (MLAs).

MLAs are language graduates from Chinese universities in their early 20s, who are usually in the process of completing Masters Degrees at their home university. They have also received training in teaching from the Centre for Language Education and Cooperation (CLEC) in Beijing. You can find more information about the programme at

Most of the MLAs are English majors so their English is proficient on arrival. MLAs teach Chinese language and culture at local New Zealand schools, aiming to increase New Zealanders awareness and understanding of Chinese culture. I understand the MLAs pay around $250 a week for board.
