Reality Check: Falsehoods in US Perceptions of China

A Letter from Chinese Ambassador to NZ Wang Xiaolong introduces the attached detailed ‘reality check’ written by Chinese Ambassador to USA.

Dear Friends, tena koe

I would like to forward you a most recent document entitled “China’s comprehensive, systematic and elaborate response to Secretary Antony Blinken’s China policy speech —— Reality Check: Falsehoods in US Perceptions of China”. As the title suggests, the document represents China’s response to and clarification of the groundless “China threat” narrative which is unfortunately repeated and reiterated by the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in his recent China policy speech.

Insofar as a lie repeated one thousand times is still a lie and, alas, falsehood intentionally fabricated and disseminated always end up in more misunderstanding or even confrontation, it is not only harmful to China, but also detrimental to international cooperation between countries different in culture, history or political system. It is high time to allow facts and figures to show to the world how deceptive, hypocritical and dangerous the US’s China policy is. Hence, the publication of the document is very timely and useful.

It covers 21 aspects of the US’s “China threat” narrative, in regards to international order, new cold war, coercive diplomacy, democracy, differences, human rights, “one-China policy”, Xinjiang, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), China-Russia relations, Indo-Pacific, the Pacific, disinformation, trade policies and practice, debt-trap, forced technology transfer, scientific and technological exchanges and cooperation, climate change, drug trafficking, global food crisis, and mass surveillance.

For each and every falsehood, the document presents a reality check, listing what the US is doing and what China is doing, laying bare who is lying. China is keen to develop friendly relations with all countries in the world, and believes only through joint efforts can humanity steer towards a bright future, which lies at the heart of our foreign policy. As a responsible country, China is ready to work with US to ensure the bilateral relationship remain on the right track, with the
prerequisite and basis of mutual respect and mutual understanding, and no interfering in each other’s internal affairs.

The healthy development of China-US relations carries more weight than itself, as it is also important to the well-being of the whole world, and is aligned with the common aspiration of international community. Just as Chinese President Xi Jinping has put it, we have a thousand reasons to get China-US relations right, and not one reason to spoil them. In this context, stopping peddling falsehoods and keeping an open mind maybe a useful first step.

I specially distribute the document to ward against the negative by-effects of the
falsehoods, which have found its way through various media platforms into New
Zealand. The barometer of New Zealanders’ perception toward China has
conspicuously indicated the harm that the misinformation and disinformation has
done to the China-New Zealand relations.

Ngā mihi.
Sincerely yours,
Wang Xiaolong
Chinese Ambassador to New Zealand
