Our Guest Speaker this month is Helen Sun. Helen’s topics will be about the challenges she faced training to be a primary teacher in N.Z. and the major differences in the educational systems between N.Z. and China. staffing, resources, class sizes and school hours , available options and students attitudes and values will be some things covered in her talk.

 Before coming to N.Z. she taught English in a couple of universities in Hu Nan Province and Guang Zhou city. Helen immigrated to N.Z. in 2002. In the past 10 years she did some part time work teaching English as a Second Language in various language schools in Auckland and Rotorua. Helen worked at John Paul College for over 5 years as coordinator for home stay’s and tour groups for JPC’s foreign students as well as a part time teacher of English to those students. Helen recently completed a Primary Teaching course through the University of Canterbury and is now looking for casual teaching positions in the Primary sector. She also has a strong interest in teaching ESOL and Mandarin.Exif_JPEG_420

 COMING MEETINGS

For August we have invited Barbara Francis from Wellington who has been doing research on Agnes Moncrieff. Agnes worked with the YWCA in China during the 1930’s through to 1945. We will be inviting both the Hamilton and Tauranga Branches to this meeting. In September we will support activities arranged by the Newcomers Network celebrating the Moon Festival, details later. We are hoping that in October some of the Rotorua Intermediate Chinese language students will come and tell us about their visit to China.

 The end of the year will be upon us before we know it !

 At the May conference Zhang, Jichun, husband of South Island Consul-General Mme Tan Xiutian launched his book “The Beauty of New Zealand.” It is a mixture of poetry on New Zealand and a range of appropriate photos. The book will retail for $ 48. but the publishers are offering a special price to the society at $ 35. If you would like a copy they we can make a direct order for the book to the Auckland publisher.
