Access:   Contact School Office to enter grounds.  The school grounds also contains Lei Tai, Rewi Alley’s replica home and current museum of photos, and a statue of Rewi Alley and George Hogg and children.

Shandan Bailie School is known in Shandan as Peili School, with Peili being the Chinese transliteration of the word ‘Bailie’.  This school has been supported for many years by NZ, and usually has a NZ teacher teaching English each year. Further information on the school is found here.

Main Hall of Shandan Bailie School, called ‘Sino – New Zealand Friendship Hall’

The main school hall, called ‘Sino-NZ Friendship Hall’.  This is used for school assemblies, meetings, sports and dance routines, and evening badminton games.

School history (post 1985) is outlined in a  Shandan information sheet – see image below.  It includes the size of the complex, numbers of students, and the name changes it has undergone since first being built on this site.

In 2015, details about the school are provided in a two-page hand-out (see images below) to each visiting delegation or international person that comes to the school.  The information (in English and Chinese) is interesting, and also provides an example of the type of information considered important to disclose – most monuments and structures throughout China are described in terms of their precise size, cost, numbers of components.
