SIMON DENG LI ART AND CULTURE EXCHANGE FUND<\/a><\/h3>\n

\nThe Simon Deng Li Art and Culture Exchange Fund is into its eighth year. Generous donations to annual NZCFS projects have impacted on the lives of hundreds of New Zealanders and Chinese, fostering the development of friendship and understanding between people, especially youth, in the two countries.<\/p>\n

Kathleen Hall Memorial Scholarship<\/a><\/h3>\n

\nKathleen Hall was a New Zealand missionary nurse in China who worked in poor rural areas under extremely difficult conditions, and trained local nurses to work alongside her. She was also swept up in the war against Japan. Not only did she nurse the sick and wounded, but time and time again she smuggled medical supplies through the Japanese lines to Dr. Norman Bethune, the Canadian surgeon who was in charge of medical services for the Chinese 8th Route Army…<\/p>\n

NZCFS Projects in Northwest China<\/a><\/h3>\n

NZCFS have deliv\"\"<\/a>ered a range of projects in the NW of China. They all started in Shandan, situated in the Hexi Corridor, Gansu. Shandan is situated in the Hexi Corridor, Gansu. NZCFS has a long standing friendship with the Shandan Bailie School<\/a> through the work of Rewi Alley<\/a> and with the Gung Ho Co-operatives<\/a> of Shandan…<\/p>\n

NZCFS Projects in Guangxi<\/a><\/h3>\n

\"\"<\/a>NZCFS has been working for several years in Dongshan Village, four hours drive north of Guilin. Dongshan is a Yao area with\u00a0 women at home farming while men go to the cities to work. Many people do not speak Mandarin Chinese and extension staff do not speak Yao, so the project targeted 400 women and encouraged them to pass on the knowledge and skills they gained to their neighbours…<\/p>\n

Shandan Bailie School<\/a><\/h3>\n

\"Shandan<\/a>When their school in Shaanxi Province was threatened by the Japanese advance, Rewi and George Hogg, plus the 60 or so students packed up and trekked to the old derelict city of Shandan on the edge of the Gobi Desert. There Rewi rented some old temples and turned them into classrooms and workships, and appointed George Hogg as headmaster. From the beginning the school was helped by New Zealand friends, who later formed the New Zealand China Friendship Society…<\/p>\n

Gung Ho Co-operatives<\/a><\/h3>\n

\"\"<\/a>The Gung Ho movement has a long history. In 1938, Rewi Alley<\/a>, Peg and Edgar Snow, and some other friends in Shanghai together set up an International Committee for the Promotion of Chinese Industrial Cooperatives. At that time, the Japanese invaders had already captured most of China\u2019s industrial cities and looked to occupy all of China in the near future…<\/p>\n
