I recently visited Chinatown in Arrowtown. The focal point is Au Lum’s store<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Here’s another photo of the store which closed after Ah Lum’s death in 1924.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

There were about 40 Cantonese miners living in 20 stone buildings as shown below.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

These buildings are the first Chinese homes in New Zealand, many of the men returned to China after finding enough gold in the surrounding hillside.<\/p>\n
