I recently visited Chinatown in Arrowtown. The focal point is Au Lum’s store.
Here’s another photo of the store which closed after Ah Lum’s death in 1924.
There were about 40 Cantonese miners living in 20 stone buildings as shown below.
These buildings are the first Chinese homes in New Zealand, many of the men returned to China after finding enough gold in the surrounding hillside.
