September 2011 NEWSLETTER

THIS MONTH:

Guest Speaker: Dr.Haixin Jiang Senior Lecturer at University of Otago

following a recent visit to Wenchuan Dr Jiang presents: “Rebuilding after the Earthquake”.

TIME: Wednesday 14 September at 7 pm

Place: Fernhill Church at 22 Stafford Street (opposite My Mate John’s Furniture shop).

The 5.12 Wenchuan earthquake buried counties and towns in Sichuan Province and killed about 80,000 people. While the pain is still lingering on among those who lost their dear ones and shock is still fresh for those who experienced the quake, the reconstruction on the ruins or on a new site was miraculously completed within 2 years.

New roads are built, the old shabby houses are completely replaced with new buildings in the formerly ruined areas, which have rapidly become tourist attractions.

The speed of reconstruction, just like China’s recent development, is amazing.

This talk aims to introduce the reconstruction and display some of the pictures of a few completely rebuilt towns and a new county built on a new site as the old site was no longer suitable for people to live on.
