I am in Shandan for three weeks, I am staying in the apartment for the foreign teacher(s). Shandan is in the Hexi corridor of west Gansu Province.

The apartment is in a new block for teachers at the Bailie Vocational College (BVC). I am the first occupant. It is modern, spacious and clean, with three bedrooms, a lounge, kitchen and bathroom, a washing machine, and with internet connection. It is on the 11th floor, so looks out on the very new campus, which is situated about one kilometre from the old campus of Shandan Bailie School (SBS).

The old SBS and the new BVC are both operating at the new campus. The principal and management team are the same for the two schools, but some classes are still run separately, as the two schools slowly integrate.

English Teachers are very keenly sought for both schools, with priority given to the BVC, which offers a higher level of courses. These positions would ideally suit a couple, but singles are all welcome.

Teachers do not need any teaching qualification, but need a minimum of a Bachelor Degree, or equivalent. Payment is lower than can be achieved in wealthy eastern regions, starting at 4500 rmb per month, but living expenses are very low, and travel is covered for a one year position. NZCFS has a very good record of placing teachers here, through the uniqueness with which this school is held in. Not only has it received visits from every NZ Ambassador in the last 25 years, but also Chinese leaders like Xi Jinping. So SBS and BVC have a special place in NZ’s relationship with China.

Since 1987, all teachers here have been from New Zealand, with a total of 24 up until 2019, when Covid forced a break.

Please do consider this position, or suggest this to anyone you know who may see this as an exciting opportunity. For more information and expressions of interest, contact me, Dave Bromwich at [email protected]. I am home in early June, and can discuss further on 021 2300288
