Discover Huangshi Chinese Garden at this year’s National Conference

124

During the morning of this year’s National Conference in Nelson, you will be able to enjoy one or more local experiences, from visiting the Nelson Saturday market to following the Oppo Hocton walk. One experience you don’t want to miss is exploring the Huangshi Chinese Garden.

The Huangshi Chinese Garden is a traditional Scholar’s Garden, built to incorporate some of the heritage trees of Nelson’s Queen’s Garden. It was planned by Nelson City Council Parks and Reserves staff after their visit to Huangshi, Nelson’s sister-city in Hubei Province.

Huangshi contributed to the garden, sending tiles for the wall and garden buildings. Dignitaries came to Nelson for the garden opening in 2007.

The Nelson Branch of NZCFS sponsored a calligrapher to come from Huangshi to write the characters for the entrance to the garden, above the Moon Gate, and beside the bridge.

Registrations are now open for the NZCFS National Conference 17-19 May. You’ll get to explore the sights of Nelson, and spend time learning from visiting speakers and joining in discussions on how we might reach out to Chinese communities here and overseas. You’ll get the opportunity to catch up with old friends and maybe even make some new ones. And did I mention there’s a wine-tasting at the end of the conference? Come and join us!
