This month our guest speaker is Helen Sun. Helen is from a small town,Xin Shao in Hu Nan Province, population about 800,000. After graduating from Hu Nan Normal University she taught English in China for 10 years.Helen immigrated to New Zealand in 2002 and has lived in Rotorua six years. Five years she spent working in the International Student Department at John Paul College. Helen will tell us about her experiences in New Zealand and describe the differences she has seen between China and New Zealand schools and culture. I am sure it will be a very interesting meeting.

Remember we start with a shared lunch followed by our speaker. Everyone is welcome so bring a friend as well as something for our lunch.

Our November meeting will be our end of the year lunch at a restaurant yet to be decided. It will more than likely be on Sunday 25 November.

The Society expresses their deepest heartfelt sympathy to Jan Burbidge for the recent loss of her husband John. We will look forward and welcome her return soon.

Many of our members had a very enjoyable time at the Moon Cake Festival. It was a hugh success with the Soundshell filled with people. The performances were full of colour and lovely to watch. Some of us participated. A video is being posted on the N.Z. China Friendship Societies website www.nzchinasociety.org.nz Then on Monday many of us attended the Mid Autumn Festival Dinner at the Regal Chinese Restaurant held by the International Student Department Wairiki Technical Institute. Many of the international students attended along with the new CEO and the Director of the International Students Dept. and other staff members. Each group of students made a presentation. It has been a very busy few days with these celebrations.

Also we are invited to The Arts Village 10th Birthday Celebrations, “The Mad Hatters Tea Party.” This is being held on Saturday 13th October at 4-6pm. (official cake cutting at 5p.m.) There is an open day on that day starting at 10:00 a.m. We will have a presence there on the day. One of our new members Dave Burt has agreed to help. Anyone else wishing to help please contact Brenda. (ph. 3325731) Also Sunday 14 October everyone will be there again along with their regular Hot Lakes Craft Market from 10a.m. to 3p.m. We hope to see some of you coming along and joining in the fun and celebrations. Everyone is welcome so spread the word and help promote us and the Arts Village facility.
